There are a variety of types of supernatural creatures in residence at Blue Earth. We are currently accepting: were-creatures, shapeshifters, vampires, demons and magic users (witches and wizards). We are not accepting applications for high fantasy, faeries, feature characters or feature character knockoffs from the television series this game is inspired by. Please do not ask, as you will simply be told to pick another concept.
"A wolf that was once, or is sometimes, a man. All werewolves are of evil disposition, having assumed a bestial form to gratify a beastial appetite, but some, transformed by sorcery, are as humane and is consistent with an acquired taste for human flesh. Some Bavarian peasants having caught a wolf one evening, tied it to a post by the tail and went to bed. The next morning nothing was there! Greatly perplexed, they consulted the local priest, who told them that their captive was undoubtedly a werewolf and had resumed its human for during the night. "The next time that you take a wolf," the good man said, "see that you chain it by the leg, and in the morning you will find a Lutheran."- Ambrose Bierce
In our game there are several types of were-creatures in the world. Their social structures tend to mimic the animal whose form they take on; for instance, wolves and coyotes live in packs that with the strongest in the group being the leader (called an alpha) while bears and wild cats are usually solitary creatures. While shifters are supernatural by nature, they do not inherently possess magical ability beyond that which a human might.
The following are allowable were breeds to play:
- Wild Cat (Mountain Lion/Cougar)
Please do not ask to play exotic animals that would not be thematic for this region. Breeds other than the ones listed above may be considered on a case by case basis, if they are reasonable. If you have an idea for something non-standard, please +request (+help +request on the game) before submitting a character application.
Were-creatures can generally take on one of three forms: animal, human and beast. Those born as a human, bitten or cursed, will likely spend most of their time this way, if they can help it. Those born as an animal will often find ways to return to that form on a fairly frequent basis. The 'beast' is somewhere between the two; both animal and man, and yet neither. The shifter is tougher, stronger, and generally much larger in this form, but also immediately recognisable to anyone who might see you roaming about like this. Shifting itself is painful, and being unprepared for it is a great way to start going through clothing fast.
Shifters possess heightened physical senses. Most have a keener sense of smell than the average human, and can distinguish more easily between scents, get a vague idea of where someone's been, or whom they've been with (if they happen to know that person's scent, too), pick up on things like fear, excitement, and arousal. For a wolf, bear, or similar animal, this will likely be the strongest sense. Depth perception is also keener, particularly for a wolf or a cat, who actively hunts for the majority of their food. Cats usually possess night vision to some degree, and see far better in the dark than most humans. The flip side of this is less acute vision during the day. Hearing is the most acute sense, in a feline shifter. Were-creatures are attuned to a range of sounds outside normal human frequency, and can pick out noises in the background more easily. They can, however, become easily overwhelmed in loud places.
Were-creatures are also tougher, stronger and generally faster than the average human, tend to heal a little more quickly, and of course possess the natural weapons of whatever animal they are tied to, when in that form or the form of the beast. Feline shifters tend to favour agility, wolf shifters, strength, and bear shifters, stamina.
All were-creatures are allergic to silver and this is really the only way to kill them quickly. Note the quickly part. They can still be destroyed by dismemberment, beheading, or enough damage taken to their vital organs such that their considerable constitution cannot compensate. Animal shifters are killing machines, but they are not invulnerable.
The human race, collectively, exclusive of the anthropoid poets. - Ambrose Bierce
This is what 90% of the town is comprised of. Grade A Homo Sapien. Granted there are some humans that can barely get themselves out of bed in the morning, but there are others that can summon the inner will to summon forth a demon from hell and order it to level a town. Talk about a pretty wide range of possibilities there, eh?
Humans are squishy, but resilient and they can adapt to situations better than any other creature in Blue Earth. Willful and courageous, inventive and curious, humans have got one thing going for them: for all of the hardships they suffer through they are gifted with the talent to survive. They use their science, technology, and magic to do this. Humans can also be good, evil and all sorts of shades in between.
In our game, shapeshifters can and do exist in the world. Rarer than werewolves and other animal shifters, they are extremely solitary creatures and don't travel in packs. They tend towards keeping a low profile as they do not have the impressive strength and agility that, for example, werewolves have.
Where a 'shifter' is usually a man or woman taking on the aspect of an animal, a shapeshifter is a non-human creature who takes on human (or humanoid or very very rarely animal) shape. Depending on the legend, they are variably weak against different substances: silver and gold are old favorites while in some legends weapons made of bone must be used.
While there are many vampire legends across the world, there are a few things that are true about all of them:
- They are unapologetically immoral and pure evil.
- They may look like a human being, but whoever that person used to be is completely and irrevocably gone.
- They do not care for sunlight. It burns their skin. (It does not make them SPARKLE, unless you count the flash of their skin bursting into flames in sunlight).
- They do not care for holy symbols. Obviously this includes the Cross, but other symbols considered sacred or holy will do, too. Faith is a deep and old magic and vampires do not care for it at all.
- They cannot enter the dwellings of mortals uninvited. Obviously this doesn't apply to non-mortals.
- One thing that will absolutely kill a vampire is beheading. This is universal across all mythos.
Vampires can take many forms and they can have many different powers and weaknesses. For example, Eastern European vampires tend to dislike getting a stake of wood through the heart (but who wouldn't, really?) There are some vampires who cannot enter holy ground. Some cannot cross running water like a river or brook. Powerful vampires have the ability to take other forms, such as a wolf, a bat or mist. These forms should not be confused with a were-creature's ability. They are simple transformations only.
Demons. These are supernatural beings who come (or came a long time ago) from another place, be it another dimension or world (or hell, even). While the most modern religions tend to (no pun intended) demonize demons, there is nothing inherently evil about them. Most are like human beings, just trying to survive and get by. Their fates seem intertwined.
As varied as the animals of the world are, that's how much variety there is amongst demonkind. As for what they look like: they can look like anybody or anything. They can have horns or scales or a carapace or claws. Some species look exactly like human beings and some have the ability to switch between this form and their natural one. Some have no physical body at all and are entirely spirit. Some can use this to take possession of living beings such as humans.
Other Supernatural Creatures
These creatures are almost universally hideous and stupid, but this was not always so. Once upon a time, a very long long time ago, they would have been considered wondrously beautiful and possessed of considerable intelligence. In their day they were considered by humans as gods, such was their power and grace.
And then one day, almost overnight, their fortune changed. Some ancient tomes say they delved too deeply into the magic that they excelled at, some said that it was a great curse laid upon their entire race for their arrogance. Whatever it was, the Troll people eventually became as they are known today: freakishly ugly and dimwitted. Their basic shape is humanoid, usually a yard taller than a man of average height. Generally they are heavier with a much denser muscle mass than human beings have.
They generally stay together in familial groups called clans with each clan carving out it's own piece of territory. Their culture is very much warrior-based with a war leader and his shaman at the top of the hierarchy. The war leader position is not an inherited position, rather it is taken by force from the previous war leader by challenging him and defeating him in single combat.
In terms of disposition, trolls are not unfriendly, but they tend to be loud, obnoxious and crude. They are quite boisterous and aggressive, as well. Part and parcel of being a warlike culture.
There are rumors of a clan of trolls living in an underground city near the human town of Blue Earth, but very few know where it is. Humans are not welcome there, though other supernatural types may be tolerated. They may also be eaten, so… luck of the draw, really.
Also, in modern times, no one has seen a single troll female so no one knows what they look like or even how trolls manage to procreate. Some things are better not to know.
